Treatment of newborn calves with diarrheaPREVENTION: 1) Make sure cows calves in a clean dry will maintained stall or paddock. 2) Give four quarts of colostrum as soon as possible after birth (within 4 hours). Best to milk out cow, harvest colostrum without any fecal debris, and feed promptly to calf using an esophageal feeder. 3) Dip navel immediately after birth with a strong iodine tincture.
ABOVE 3 STEPS ARE MANDATORY. No amount of treatment can make up for diseases acquired in a colostral deprived calf born into a dirty environment. 4) 3cc BoSe
TREATMENT At first sign of diarrhea or decrease appetite give antibiotics and oral electrolytes. ANTIBIOTICS. a) give 2cc Exencel/Naxel im once a day. or b) give 1 dose (marked 110# on syringe) of Tribrissen paste. Repeat this in 12 hours, and at 24 hours, then give once a day (give 3 doses in a row, on then once a day) ORAL ELECTROLYTES Day 1 a) give 2 quarts Resorb at 1st sign of dairrhea, Use oral esophogeal feeder if necessary. b) give one quart milk 2 - 4 hour later (noon) c) Feed Resorb at next feeding Day 2 d) If no improvement repeat as above, if better feed milk at normal time, give one feeding of resorb at mid day.
