Definition: usually 3 - 10 days post calving with an abnormal uterine discharge which is typically watery and or fetid. Uterus enlarged over the brim of the pelvis.
Procedures: Complete Physical exam with temp, ck for ketosis, vaginal exam ( using clean technique) Mild Metritis: uterus enlarged, dark red to brown watery, slight fetid discharge, cow temp appetite and milk production normal Treatment: none, watch for signs of illness. Moderate metritis: uterus enlarged, foul smelling, watery discharge. Temp > 103, +/- off feed and milk: Treatment: Naxel ( 12 - 25 cc) or Pen G ( 25 -35cc)HOLD MILK 3cc ECP if less than 10 days fresh and not given with- the last 7 days. Give 2 cc oxytocin when milked. Severe metritis: as above with more obvious signs off a sick cow the is very depressed, reluctant to move, eats very little. Treatment: Vaginal exam to remove as much of placenta as easily possible. 6 gms of oxytetracycline iv, and 2 gms intrauterine.for 3 - 5 days HOLD MILK! OR 25 cc Naxel daily for 5 days Banamine 12 -20 cc once daily for 2 days. Hypersaline, electrolytes, dextrose as other signs indicate.
