Secondary Ketosis is usually in a fresh cow with a positive urine ketone test that has some other disease that caused her to go off feed and develop ketosis. Examples: held cleanings, mastitis, DA etc. These other conditions must also be treated at the same time in order the resolve the ketosis.
Mild Ketosis: A cow that has mild to moderate urine ketones, is eating ok, her eyes are bright, rumen is full (not sunk in on left side) and moving strong and regular, milking as expected. Treatment: 16 oz propylene glycol for 5 days probiotics (pioneer or Lira gold paste) check for other disease conditions monitor appetite and production daily
Moderate Ketosis A cow that has moderate to severe urine ketones, slightly off feed, eyes dull but not sunk, rumen is sunk in, down on milk. Treatment. iv dextrose with 12 cc multiple B vit probiotics check for other diseases follow up with 16 oz glycol for 5 days (or repeat iv dextrose daily but be sure get a good iv stick) call vet if cow does not improve or worsens
Severe Ketosis: Severe ketosis on urine ketone, moderate to fully off feed, eyes dull and sunk, rumen hollow with weak slow movements, ears cold, way down on milk. Treatment: check very close for DA and Metritis call a vet it not sure!
